The school was built in 1949 and it is one of the largest schools in the centre of Borås with 840 pupils altogether from six to sixteen. In Sweden children start "prep" school at the age of six. The ordinary school starts a year later. This year there are 56 pupils in the "prep" school and 194 pupils in the first three forms of the ordinary school. The following stage ( 4th,5th and 6th forms) consists of 189 pupils. The last three forms are attended by about 400 pupils who not only come from Engelbrekt but also from two other schools without a secondary stage. In Sweden parents have an option to choose the most adequate school for their children. Unfortunately, we receive more applicants than we can admit.
The building has recently been restored and an annex has been erected. Next year a new physical education hall will be built. The schools curriculum emphasises culture i.e. drama, drawings, music, handiwork and physical education. The older pupils choose themselves. This year the pupils in the last form set up " A thousand and one nights". They made themselves the clothes and decorations. We believe namely culture develops their personality and want to make it available to everyone. Their drawings, pictures and other aesthetic items can be seen in the corridors. Once a year the public is invited to take part in the performances and the works of art. The schools objective is to make the pupils into mature and democratic human beings thereby expressing themselves and functioning well in a modern society. From the age of ten English is compulsory and in the 6th form they may choose either French or German or Spanish as their second foreign language. Our logotype is this putting the pupil in the (town) centre. |
