Cinema Röda Kvarn is run by The Office of Arts of the City Council. Todays Röda Kvarn shows primarily newly produced quality films from all over the world. The goal is to show different kinds of movies, not least non-commercial ones. This goal is reached by showing films in a regular programme sundays-tuesdays, children's matinées saturdays-sundays and closed showings for schools.

Historical account of the Röda Kvarn cinema
Röda Kvarn [in english ´Red Windmill´] is one of the oldest and best preserved cinemas in Sweden.  The building was drawn by architect Lars Kjellman and inaugurated in 1914.

It was pastrycook J A Ohlsson who received permission to build the motion picture theater by the Viskan river in downtown Borås, situated by  the Place of Sven Erikson [Sven Eriksonsplatsen] and the Square of the Knalle [Knalletorget]. Around this period of time, it was fashion to build big, lavish and luxurious cinemas — to compete with regular theaters — and Röda Kvarn was no exception.

The architect, mr Lars Kjellman, was considered to be both interested and well versed in the different styles of architectures. At the time, Röda Kvarn housed 500 seats and was the third motion picture theater in the city of Borås. Since then the auditorium has been rebuilt and changed numerous times and the number of seats has been gradually reduced, not least as a consequence of being used as a stage for theater during a number of years.

Röda Kvarn was declared an historic building in 1998, meaning, in short, that the building is to be preserved. In 2004, an extensive two-phase renovation work began to restore the auditorium to it´s former cinematic glory and at the same time update the technology to modern standards. In february of 2005 Röda Kvarn was reopened.

It now houses 252 seats (plus room for 4 wheelchairs) and is the largest cinema auditorium in Borås.
