The Arts Centre of Borås (summary)
The Arts Centre [Kulturhuset] in Borås was opened in December 1975. The idea was first proposed in the 1950s but it was not until 1970 that funds were available and a decision to build the centre was made. The building was designed by Roland Gandvik who was the Borås city architect at the time.
The premises comprise some 180 000 square feet of space which house the library, theatre and museum. The three entities are linked and they share a joint entrance. The centre also houses a café. Focal points of the building, both outside and inside, are marked by site-specific sculptures or artistic treatments by leading Swedish artists of the time.
During 2010 and 2011 the Arts Centre went through an extensive restoration process.
