Compulsory school

The Swedish "grundskolan", the "basic school", comprises the nine-year compulsory school and the preparatory pre-school class. In the City of Borås, the three municipal districts are responsible for compulsory school and pre-school, each in their geographical area. The North district is responsible for ESN school throughout the municipality.

School attendance is compulsory for all children between the age of 7 and 16. The children can also choose to begin school at 6 years of age. All schools have a pre-school class for 6-years-olds. This is compulsory for the municipality, but optional for parents and children. At 6 years of age, the children have a choice between the pre-school class and to begin in the ordinary school.

Your child will be offered a place in the school nearest to your home. You will also be offered school transport if the distance gives cause for this.

The family might want the child to attend another school in the municipality. This will be satisfied if there are vacant places, and it does not cause major problems. There is also the choice of an independent school. It you choose another school than the one nearest to your home, you must however yourself provide transport for your child.

There is a catalogue which presents each school in Borås. You can read the catalogue as a pdf filePDF, or ask for it at your municipal district office. The catalogue is in Swedish.

If you have any questions about the school; contact your child's form master / mistress, who handles the day-to-day activities. You can also get advise and support from headmaster, school nurse, adviser or psychologist.
