Borås' coat of arms

The coat of arms for Borås remains the same as it was before the big municipal merger in 1974. The coat of arms in its modern form has existed since 1939, but its origin is to be found centuries back.

In the charter for Borås that king Gustav II Adolf signed on the 25th of May, 1622, the coat of arms is described as "two wool scissors, one pointing downward, the other pointing upward". From that description, heraldists at the National Archives created a coat of arms that was confirmed by king Gustaf V in 1939.

Wool scissors in the coat of arms for a city famous for textile industry seems quite natural, but the reason that wool scissors were chosen in the symbol is another. Borås was founded to create a center for the itinerary trade, and the peddlers had much forgings to sell. It was smithwork and not textile the scissors symbolized at that time. The textile production is younger than the origin of the coat of arms.

Borås' coat of arms is registered at the Patent Office and is protected by law.
