Keep water in small tanks or plactic bottles (filled to three quarters) in the freezer. It will serve as drinking water, and help to keep the freezer at low temperatur during a lenghty power failure.
When there is a gale warning or a warning for a power failure for some other reason, there is a number of preparations that can be made:
Fill the water tanks
Put the torch lights within easy reach
Charge batteries
Set the freezer to maximum effect
Do the dishes
If you have a fire-place, collect wood
Prepare food for two days and keep in the fridge
Check the fire alarm, have your fire-extinguisher handy, check that the emergency exits are free.
Keep in mind:
Everybody in the family must know where to find torch light and lighter/matches. These things must be easy to find in darkness.
A lengthy power failure might affect the water supply. Fill tanks and bottles. Expect some two litres pro family member and day. Fill the bath tub to have water to flush the toilet.
See to that you have fuel for a few days for your paraffin stove. Don't place the stove under the kitchen fan, the grease in the fan might catch fire.
Candles will help to keep the room warm, but must never be left without watch.
If the temperature falls, choose one room to live in. Draw the blinds and the curtains, or hang a blanket in front of the window.
Have a supply of food that can be stored in room temperature and can be cooked on the paraffin stove.
Keep informed. You must have a battery-operated radio. The channel P4 will give information on the power failure and its consequences.
