Swedish for Immigrants (SFI)
Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) is a course in basic Swedish for those whose mother tongue is not Swedish. If you are new to Sweden, you will learn to speak, read, write, and use the Swedish language in everyday life.
Many people apply to SFI, and therefore, there is sometimes a waiting list for our courses. Education is free, but does not entitle you to student grants or loans from CSN.

If you come from a country outside the EU:
- You are over 16 years old.
- You lack basic knowledge of Swedish.
- You are registered as a resident in Borås.
If you are an EU/EEA citizen or come from Switzerland:

Which course should I take?
Together with a Study Counsellor, you will decide which course suits you best. We take your previous experience, educational background, and the purpose of your studies into account.
At SFI, you can receive up to 15 hours of education per week in a daytime course.

Orientation Courses
If you want to study full-time, you have the opportunity to combine SFI (15 hours per week) with one of our orientation courses.
The orientation course Read and Write
The orientation course Read and Write is for those who lack basic reading and writing skills or who can read and write but do not master the Latin alphabet. In this course, you will have time to practice and strengthen your reading development and gain more experience in writing. SFI teachers teach the course, but the content differs from regular SFI courses. The groups are often smaller, which provides excellent opportunities for individual attention and teacher support.
You can apply for the Read and Write orientation course if you are:
- Studying Course A, Study Path 1
- Studying Course B, Study Path 1
- Studying Course C, Study Path 1 (in some cases)
Vocational Orientation Course
In the Vocational Orientation Course, you will learn more about working life in Sweden, various vocational training programmes, and the different professions you can choose from once you have completed SFI courses C/D. You will also meet teachers from our vocational programmes who will explain what the courses include, and you will get to take part in many interesting study visits to schools and workplaces.
You can apply for a Vocational Orientation Course if you are:
- Studying Course B, Study Path 2
- Studying Course C, any study path
- Studying Course D, any study path
